Regenerating the Kennaway Estate

At Stoke Newington Church Street in Hackney, BREE Construction is delivering the regeneration of the Kennaway Estate for Southern Housing Group. Chosen to deliver the 18.5 million pound scheme, it is replacing the former Taverner House with new homes for the area.

The project provides 61 mixed-tenure homes, of which 37 are affordable, set across three new buildings ranging from three to seven storeys. It forms part of the ongoing renewal of the estate around Stoke Newington Church Street.

Design and approval

The scheme was designed by Waugh Thistleton Architects, with the replacement of Taverner House by three new buildings receiving planning approval from Hackney Council. Construction began in 2022 as the estate's regeneration moved from planning into delivery.

As with many estate-renewal schemes, the proposals attracted scrutiny and comment from residents during the planning process, reflecting the significance of the changes for the existing community at Kennaway.

Delivering a new development on the footprint of an existing estate block calls for careful management of demolition, construction and access alongside the established community around Stoke Newington Church Street. The site team is coordinating the works to limit disruption to neighbours as the three new buildings take shape.

Mixed-tenure homes for Hackney

With 37 of its 61 homes affordable, the Kennaway regeneration is intended to deliver a balanced mix of tenures while increasing the supply of homes on the estate. The new buildings are designed to sit within the existing Stoke Newington streetscape and to provide modern accommodation in place of the older block.

For BREE Construction, the scheme reflects continuing work with housing associations to renew established estates and add affordable homes in well-connected London neighbourhoods.

The regeneration is being delivered as a live, occupied-estate project, where maintaining good relations with residents and the wider community remains central throughout the build. On completion, the scheme will leave Southern Housing Group with a renewed estate and a net gain in affordable homes for Stoke Newington.
