Completing the Holly Street regeneration

Queensbridge Quarter in Hackney, E8, was a 151-home scheme completed in 2009 for Queensbridge Quarter Developments Ltd by United House, a BREE legacy company. The development formed a key phase in the long-running regeneration of the Holly Street estate, one of east London's landmark estate renewal programmes.

Built with a contract value of around 9 million pounds and running from November 2006, the scheme replaced earlier estate housing with new homes designed to a high standard for the area.

The phase formed part of the renewal of the Holly Street estate around Queensbridge Road, an area that had long been the focus of regeneration efforts in this part of east London. The scheme replaced earlier housing with homes built to contemporary standards for the existing and incoming community.

Design-led estate renewal

Queensbridge Quarter was designed by Levitt Bernstein, whose work on the Holly Street regeneration was recognised in the Housing Design Awards. The architectural quality of the scheme reflected the ambition behind the wider estate renewal, which aimed to create a genuinely better place to live rather than simply replacing old buildings.

Specialist subcontractors contributed render and facade systems and structural steelwork to the development, supporting the delivery of well-detailed homes within the regeneration.

Working within an estate undergoing phased renewal meant managing construction alongside residents who remained in nearby homes, with the site team coordinating deliveries and access to limit disruption during the build.

Part of a wider transformation

As a phase of the Holly Street regeneration, Queensbridge Quarter helped complete the transformation of an estate that had become a byword for the problems of post-war high-rise housing. The new homes contributed to a more settled, mixed neighbourhood in Hackney.

The scheme stands among BREE's legacy estate-regeneration projects, where the emphasis was on long-term renewal and design quality for established communities.

The completion of the scheme in 2009 added 151 new homes to the regenerated estate, helping to deliver the long-term vision of a more mixed and settled community in this part of Hackney. The recognition the wider regeneration received at the Housing Design Awards underlined the quality of what was achieved over the course of the programme.
