A centenary scheme for veterans
The Centenary Development at Queen Elizabeth Terrace in Morden, Surrey, brought 68 new homes for ex-Service personnel and their families, delivered by BREE Construction for Haig Housing. The development redeveloped the former Rhodes Moorhouse Court on the trust's Morden estate, replacing older accommodation with modern homes built specifically for the veteran community.
The scheme was named to mark Haig Housing's centenary and represents the charity's continuing mission to house those who have served. Work started on site to clear and rebuild the older court, creating a fresh quarter of the estate around Queen Elizabeth Terrace.
Homes designed for those who served
Designed by Haines Phillips Architects, the 68 homes were planned to a high standard for accessibility and long-term occupation by veterans and their families. The development went on to receive a Secured by Design Gold Award, recognising the attention paid to designing out crime and giving residents a safe, secure place to live.
The homes were arranged to create a coherent new neighbourhood within the wider Morden estate, knitting the new accommodation into the established community of Service families already living there.
Building within a live estate occupied by Service families required careful phasing and management, with the redevelopment of the older court progressing while the surrounding community continued to live and move around the site.
A royal opening
In October 2019, HM The Queen visited Haig Housing in Morden to formally open the Centenary Development, a fitting recognition of the charity's work and the quality of the new homes. The royal opening drew national and local coverage and underlined the significance of the scheme to the veteran community.
For BREE Construction, the Morden development shows purposeful affordable new-build work delivered for a specialist client with a clear social mission.
The completed Centenary Development provided a lasting addition to Haig Housing's estate at Morden, giving veterans and their families a secure, purpose-built place to call home and reinforcing the trust's century-long commitment to those who have served in the armed forces.
